Sikhi teaches to feel the pain and melt



Today as I was going over various Punjabi newspapers, and I read this news of a 5-year old kid being murdered by his kidnappers. The child was kidnapped on his way to school and abductors demanded a ransom of one million rupees. As the worried parents negotiated, the deal was finalized at Rs.400, 000. Uncle of child went to give money and police, as planned, reached the spot to nab the criminals. But the negligent and careless police officers didn’t act on time and the kidnappers went away with money. And then, after a few days the little kid was murdered and his body thrown near a road.  

This incident has got nothing to do with my personal life, but still I, as a human can feel the pain of parents who lost their beautiful son, who never came back after going to school. I couldn’t stop my tears, it was, as if he was somewhat related to me. And I believe every Kid; every child is related to ME, with his innocence, with his closeness to Infinity, He is close to me. Whenever I see a kid smiling or playing, it gives me joy, I forget my sorrow, my pain and try to be one with the joy emanating from the smile and eyes of that kid. I love kids and they love me back. For me every child is form of god, to be loved, to be treasured. And when I saw the picture of this child who was murdered by demons in form of humans, I broke down. How can a human do this? It takes heart of an animal to kill a small child. Few days back was a report of a 4-year old being killed by his neighbours for money. These types of things make me think, where is all the humanity, the godly virtues gone? A child goes to school and his parents remain worried about their kid. A young woman goes to school, college or work and there are hundreds around who watch her with filth of vikaars in their eyes. And it’s not just in Punjab or India, its everywhere in world. Couple of years back, we had a painful incident in UK, where a 17 month old baby, Baby P, was brutally tortured and murdered by his step-father, right in front of his mother’s eyes, who didn’t stop the inhuman beast from inflicting torture on little soul.  

These things take the mind in awastha where it’s hard to stay calm and composite. We all believe there is a God, watching over all of us and delivering justice to all. We also say everything happens in Hukam, but are these things acts of Hukam? Are they will of God?  No way. Waheguru the Merciful can never do these things. It’s the weakened human mind, weakened by Lust and Anger, Greed and Pride, Attachment and Ego, which commits such acts. Yes, at the end of day, when Mind gives up, when there is no other mean left to soothe it, to pacify it, we chose the words such as ‘God’s will’ , ‘Hukam’ and ‘Raza’. But practically, it can never be Hukam of God to commit such heinous crimes. Some people try to bring in ‘Karmic Theory’ in these happenings. Often Karam (deeds and misdeeds) of last lives are blamed for the pain and suffering which human undergoes in this life. But shall we blame everything on Karams of last lives? If that’s the way, then there should be no police, no army, no law and no courts to bring people to justice for their deeds. It’s easy to ‘point’ at deeds of past lives, but that’s not practical. This is not Hukam of Waheguru and not bad karams of last lives. These are heinous crimes against humanity, against creation of God which should be properly punished.

 Shaheedi of Sahibzadey was not ‘Bhaana of Waheguru’, but an evil act of Vazeer Khan. If it was Bhaana of Akaal Purakh, Guruji would not have sent Baba Banda Singh ji Bahadur to punish the evil tyrants. The killings of innocent Sikh children in jails of Mir Manu, the cutting of kid’s bodies, sewing them as garland and  putting around mother’s neck, hanging crying little kids on spears can never be seen as Bhaana or Hukam of Waheguru, else Khalsa Panth would not have punished Mir Manu and Mughal forces. People have to be held accountable for their deeds and punished Khalsa way, that’s Bhaana of Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj. ‘Karam Sidhant’ is fine for few things, not all. Most of the things which happen in ‘this’ life are due to karams of ‘this’ life and not some unknown life. And we are fully accountable for them. Good deeds will ultimately lead to good result and bad ones will definitely have bad results. If I do something good, I shouldn’t expect the result in some next life, but in this itself, and if I do something bad in this life, I ought to pay for it in this life. It’s all about how we use our senses given by Waheguru, how we use our mind and intellect. One bad deed leads to another, it’s like a chain reaction. Karam leads to Karam, good one to good one and bad one to bad one.

We, as Sikhs of Guru should always try to feel pain of others in our hearts. The one who cannot feel pain of others, who can walk away smilingly even after looking at tears of others can never be close to God. Daya, compassion is mother of Dharam. Start having Daya for others, Waheguru will have Daya on us. And one day, this Compassion will become Dharam, which will lead us to Waheguru. Each Gursikh is an agent of Waheguru Akaal Purakh, giving out message of Waheguru’s Naam, Truth, human virtues to each and everyone in this world. Gursikhs of Guru have been given duty by Waheguru to establish Dharam on this planet and act as Army of Timeless lord, which is most compassionate to those who are innocent, but has the power to vanquish tyrants with the fury of Bir-ras emanating from Compassion and Human virtues in their own self. Wherever we are, whatever we do, its duty of every Sikh to see around him that Dharam is upheld. Khalsa is sovereign Army of Akaal Purakh and it’s the duty of Khalsa warriors (Naam Abhyaasi Gurmukhs) to stand guard of Humanity. Remember, the more we are close to Waheguru, far we are from our unreal-self. As we get closer to Waheguru, the spirit to do something positive for Panth, for humanity comes by itself. A Sikh never waits for Shubh Karam (holy deeds). A Sikh never looks at useless philosophies of scholars and writers to seek guidance to carry out Hukam of Waheguru, as enshrined in Baani of Guru Granth Sahib ji. Sikh has to has compassion in him if he wants to get close to Waheguru. Sikh has to melt like wax if he wishes to enter Abode of Waheguru, as Guru Arjan Dev ji says –


ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਨਹੀ ਦ੍ਰਵੈ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਕਹੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਗਵੈ ॥
He makes all sorts of efforts, but his soul is still not softened
how can he go to the Court of the Lord?


As Sikhs, it’s our duty to spread the beautiful message of our Father Guru Nanak Dev ji to entire humanity, which was propagated by Nine Gurus after him and today which is enshrined in Baani of Guru Granth Sahib ji, The message of Compassion and humility, message of Naam and Baani. This is the only way demonic virtues can be defeated and humane virtues resurrected in Human race. And still if the demonic forces try to destroy humanity and humans, torture and kill innocents, then Khalsa shall take up the role of Holy Warrior and destroy the demons with the Chandi blessed by Guru Gobind Singh ji. Khalsa is the one who feels the pain of others as his own pain, who never hesitates to fight and die for others who can’t do it themselves. Khalsa is the one who can laugh heartedly like a child with a small little kid and at same time fight like a lion with the beast who tries to harm that kid. Khalsa is the one who just doesn’t protects his own sister and daughter, but he’s the one who’ll stand up any time, any day for honor of any woman, irrespective of her caste, colour, race or religion, seeing the woman as her own sister, own daughter, his own mother. Its not the virtue of Khalsa, a Gursikh to sit down idly, continue watching the injustice happen, to let Adharam prevail and then blame everything on Karams of some past lives or power of Kalyug. Khalsa is rebel, revolutionary and that’s what Guru Gobind Singh ji made us. The day we recognized our true self in mirror of Gurbaani and Sikhi principles, we’ll feel the pain of every innocent who’s been killed, tortured, insulted and dishonored. That day we’ll cry to Waheguru and Waheguru will bless us with power to stand up for Dharam, be a Karm-yogi, a Sant-Sipahi and act on His Behalf.

In the end, I’ll leave you with this beautiful Vaar of Bhai Gurdaas ji -


ਰਾਤਿ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰੀ ਅੰਧਕਾਰੁ ਲਖ ਕਰੋੜੀ ਚਮਕਨ ਤਾਰੇ॥
ਘਰ ਘਰ ਦੀਵੇ ਬਾਲੀਅਨਿ ਪਰ ਘਰ ਤਕਨਿ ਚੋਰ ਚਗਾਰੇ॥
ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਘਰਬਾਰੀਆ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਤਾਕ ਸਵਣਿ ਨਰ ਨਾਰੇ॥
ਸੂਰਜ ਜੋਤਿ ਉਦੋਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਿ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ॥
ਬੰਧਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਪਸੂ ਪਰੇਤ ਪਤਿਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ॥
ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥7॥
In the dark night myriad stars shine.
The houses are lit by lighting the lamps but still the thieves also roam about for the purpose of stealing.
The householders shut the doors of their homes and shops before they go to sleep.
The sun with its light dispels the darkness of night.
Likewise the Gurmukh making people understand the importance of name (meditation), Daan (charity), and ishnaan(ablution) sets them free from the bondage (of life and death).
The pleasure fruit of Gurmukhs is the company of Holy persons through which animals, ghosts and the fallen ones are salvaged and liberated.
Such beneficent persons are dear to the Guru.(7)
