Warriors of Faith

Legend of 'Shaheed' Baba Raam Singh Bedi -3 'Battle Won'

Dasmesh Pita Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj turned Mortals into Immortals, poor and weak into Mighty Warriors. Amrit of Guru’s Baani made cowards fight like lions in battlefield. Maharaj promised forever to Khalsa Panth his Love, his Divine Protection and Guidance. Maharaj assured his Panth that He would always remain ‘In his Panth, with his Panth’. This was the faith, love, belief which made Khalsa Panth always see and feel Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj assisting, guiding and helping Panth in time of need, time of distress.

With divine blessings and power of Dasmesh pita, Baba Raam Singh ji fought without his head, which stuck such fear in hearts and minds of enemies that they shivered at sight of Khalsa Panth.

Dal Panth led by Jathedars like Baba Jassa Singh and Baba Karam Singh started its charge on enemy forces led by Shanchi Khan. Before the charge, Shaheed Singhs led by Baba Raam Singh ji and Singhs on battlefield did humble ardas to Dasmesh Pita to assist them in Battlefield, to which Maharaj replied to his Singhs.

(Seeing humility of His Singhs,
Kalgidhar’s voice echoed in skies
‘’O Khalsa, May victory be yours,
Face your enemy and rage the Battle’’)

(Hearing Satguru’s orders, Singhs were overjoyed,
They joined and roared like clouds in Sky,
Many Singhs with Love and Devotion,
Had Blessed Darshan of Guru Gobind Singh ji)

(A Large Shaheedi Fauj (Army of Immortals)
Appeared in the skies after Guruji’s words
Taking their blessings and protection, Singhs attacked Afghan Army
Shouting slogans of ‘ Akaal Akaal’ ‘The Wonderful’)

Khalsa Fauj Attacked already tired, shattered and broken Afghan Muslim Army and this time, Singhs had the upper hand. As the battle raged, Jathedars planned to take down General of Enemy, Shanchi Khan, so that battle would end quickly. Second nephew of Shaheed Baba Mani Singh ji, Bhai Tharaaj Singh ( Elder nephew Baba Agarh Singh ji, the Legendary Khalsa warrior had laid down his life in Shaheedi Jatha of Baba Raam Singh ji Bedi) took up sewa of cutting Shanchi Khan’s head.

(There was nephew of (Baba) Mani Singh ji,
His name was Tharaaj Singh and was mighty like Pandav Bheem.
He lived with Sardar Khushal Singh
And killed many enemies in battlefield)

(He carried a Big Gun
This had capacity to fire massive gunpowder
He fixed it with leather ropes
And became firm in his mission to kill Shanchi)

(Tharaaj Singh remembered Satguru ji
And went near Shanchi Khaan
Holding the large Gun in his Hand, He ignited the Gunpowder
It hit Shanchi Khan and he fell down from his horse)

(It was as if Lightning had struck the ground,
Or as if Satguru ji had smashed off Crown from Muslim’s head
Leaping his horse he went near Shanchi
And quickly took out his Saif )

(He cut off head of Shanchi Khaan
And held it, like a potter removes pot from potter’s wheel
Cutting the head, Singh gave out a loud Jaikaara
And bringing head of Shanchi, showed it to Khalsa Jathedars)

After Shanchi Khan was killed by Baba Tharaaj Singh, Baba Jassa Singh Ahluwalia finished Jalaal Khan, only remaining General of Afghans. Rendered leader-less, with all its Generals dead, Afghan army was slaughtered in battlefield by Singhs. History tells 60,000 Afghans died in this battle. Seeing the fury of Khalsa warriors, Pathans laid down their arms, and begged Khalsa Panth for mercy.

(You have your Amritsar’s vow,
Forgive us, let us live, don’t kill us,
We and our future generations
Will never ever attack this land (Punjab) again).

When Afghan soldiers begged for mercy, they were arrested and next day Khalsa Army left them on northern Banks of River Attock. Prince of Afghanistan had already fled to Kabul. This was Last attack by Afghans on Punjab in 18th century. After this, Afghan Muslims never dared to cross River Attock and attack Punjab and India.

With Great Sacrifice of Baba Raam Singh ji Bedi, Baba Agarh Singh and many many Shaheed warriors of Khalsa Panth, the attacks from north-west of Punjab, which continued ruthlessly for 800 years, were ended, and Sikhs started ruling over Punjab, in form of Misals, before Maharaja Ranjeet Singh ji united different Misals and created an independent and unified Khalsa Raaj.
Freedom, Independence is very great word and greater is the feeling of Freedom, but freedom comes at a cost. It has to be won, a heavy prize has to be paid and our great ancestors paid with their blood for freedom of Punjab, freedom of Panth. After a struggle, which started in 1708 and ended in 1776, nearly 68 years Sikhs shed their blood relentlessly, without giving up, cowing down, backing off, and ultimately achieved independence and created Mighty Khalsa Empire.

It takes peaceful sacrifices like of Baba Mani Singh and Baba Taaru Singh ji, and inspirational Soldier-Generals like Baba Deep Singh, Baba Gurbaksh Singh, Baba Kapoor Singh and Baba Raam Singh to lead a Panth in battlefields. And it takes blood of Millions, who are ready to be part of ‘Shaheed Jatha’ to colour a nation into colour of freedom.

Are we, Sikhs of today, ready for Sacrifice?
